The Executive Chairman of Kaduna South Local Government on Tuesday, 23rd December, 2025, officially launched the commencement of weekly markets in Barnawa and Kurmin Mashi, marking a significant step in the administration’s drive to expand grassroots economic development.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman explained that the new markets are part of his administration’s long term strategy to support traders, farmers, and artisans while improving access to affordable goods for residents.
He stated that the initiative will provide one thousand (1,000) direct jobs and more than fifty thousand (50,000) indirect jobs, noting that the markets will serve as economic bases where small businesses can thrive. According to him, this aligns with Governor Uba Sani's Sustain Agenda and commitment to close the unemployment gap in immediate communities and Kaduna State at large.
The Chairman highlighted that since taking office, his administration has created over ten thousand (10,000) direct jobs, with multiplier effects reaching more than two hundred thousand (200,000) indirect jobs, through investments in healthcare, education, agriculture, business grants, market development, and sourcing vendors and contractors from within Kaduna South. He said the introduction of weekly markets strengthens this ongoing effort to build an economy that benefits residents at the community level.
Commending the initiative, the District Heads of Barnawa and Tudun Wada praised the Executive Chairman for his sustained commitment to economic development, education, and health within Kaduna South. They described the weekly markets as timely and impactful, noting that such interventions directly improve the welfare of residents and strengthen community resilience.
The Chairman also emphasized that the markets would contribute to the local government’s internally generated revenue through approved levies, which would be reinvested into improving market infrastructure, sanitation, and security. He assured traders and residents that proper management structures would be put in place to ensure orderliness and a conducive trading environment.
The event witnessed the presence of the Chairman of the Revenue Committee of Kaduna South Local Government, the Chairmen of the Barnawa and Kurmin Mashi markets, as well as the Councillors representing Barnawa and Badikko/Kurmin Mashi wards. Their attendance reflects the collaborative effort between the executive, legislative, and community leadership in advancing local development.
Community members and traders expressed optimism that the weekly markets would boost commercial activities, create employment opportunities, and improve access to affordable goods.
The introduction of the weekly markets in Barnawa and Kurmin Mashi reflects Kaduna South Local Government’s continued focus on people centred governance and sustainable community development.
