About Kaduna South
Our History
Kaduna South Local Government Area (LGA) is located in Kaduna State, Nigeria, with its headquarters in Makera. It was created on 23rd September 1991 from the former Kaduna metropolitan area. The LGA shares boundaries with Kaduna North to the north, Chikun to the south, and Igabi to the northwest. The area covers about 46 square kilometres and had a population of over 400,000 people according to the 2006 census, making it one of the most densely populated areas in Kaduna State. Kaduna South is divided into several districts and wards, including Tudun Wada, Makera, Kakuri, Barnawa, Sabon Gari, Television, and Unguwan Mu’azu, among others. These divisions help in local administration and governance.
Kaduna South is a highly diverse and multicultural area. Major ethnic groups include Hausa/Fulani, Gbagyi, Bajju, Jaba, and Kataf. Other Nigerian ethnic groups such as Yoruba, Igbo, Igala, Nupe, and Kanuri also live and do business in the area. Due to its industrial and commercial nature, the area has attracted foreigners such as Europeans and Asians who work in industries, especially textiles. This diversity has made Kaduna South a center of cultural interaction. Different religious and cultural festivals are celebrated in the area, including Muslim festivals (Sallah), Christmas, and New Year celebrations.
Kaduna South is an important commercial and industrial hub within Kaduna metropolis. Many residents are involved in trade, commerce, craftsmanship, technology, and small-scale industries. Markets like those in Kakuri and Makera play a vital role in economic activities. The area also hosts a large number of public and private workers, as well as artisans. Its urban nature makes it a center for business and employment opportunities.
Kaduna South has a well-developed educational system. It is home to several tertiary institutions, including the Federal Polytechnic Kaduna (main campus at Tudun Wada), as well as schools of health and nursing. In addition, there are many secondary, primary, and nursery schools—both public and private—making education widely accessible in the area.
The administrative headquarters of the LGA is located in Makera. The area is easily accessible by road, rail, and air, especially through the Kaduna international airport. Historically, Kaduna South is part of the Zazzau Emirate and has expanded over time with the creation of additional districts for better administration.
